The Active Transport Group (ATG) is a team of parent volunteers working alongside Mount Lawley Primary School and the P&C to improve traffic safety, reduce congestion, and encourage more active ways of getting to and from school.
Each school day, hundreds of students arrive by car, foot, bike, or scooter. This creates challenges—congested streets, parking pressure, and safety risks for young pedestrians. The ATG was formed to address these issues head-on and to help families make simple travel choices that benefit the whole school community.
The group leads initiatives such as the Walking School Bus, bike education sessions, safe travel route mapping, and our annual participation in WA Bike Month and National Ride2School Day. We’ve also helped secure thousands of dollars through the Your Move program—run by the Department of Transport—which provides grants and support to schools promoting walking, riding and public transport. These grants have funded bike and scooter racks, signage, and safety education for students.
How can you help? Even small actions make a big difference:
- Walk, ride or scoot with your child once a week
- Park and Walk a few blocks away instead of right at the gate
- Use Kiss 'n Drive safely—no U-turns, keep it moving
- Volunteer for the Walking Bus or help at one of our events
- Stay informed and share ideas to make things better
Together, we can make drop-off and pick-up times safer, healthier, and more enjoyable for everyone—while helping our kids build lifelong active habits.
